![]() ![]() ![]() The prejudice is apparent particularly on page 91, this when you see the play by play scene of extreme racism of a white lady refusing to give John Lewis and fellow blacks service, “We don’t serve niggers here” (Lewis 91), the waitress states. You can truly see throughout the book the pervasiveness of racism in the United States and the racial inequality that is so apparent in their lives. The recurring theme in this graphic novel March: Book One is racism and power. This book emphasizes the strength of nonviolent protests and how people can join together to change history and try to end segregation. John Lewis even worked next to Martin Luther King, Jr. John Lewis, was a college student in Nashville, who joined the civil rights movement and became chairman of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and represented them at the March on Washington. March: Book One is a first hand view of John Lewis, a congressman whose life portrayed the hardship that black families endured in the 1950s and the struggle for basic human rights. ![]()
